National Teaching Fellow•Professor John Fieldhouse is an apprentice trained engineer with 19 years industrial experience in Research and Development. He gained his BSc (First) degree at the University of Leeds and his PhD from the University of Huddersfield. He has over 30 years of academic experience.
• After entering academic life he continued his links with industry, completing some 23 “turnkey” design and development projects.
• His research has always been industrially driven and he has undertaken numerous automotive braking research projects with industrial partners – typically, Bentley Motors, Toyota Motor Corporation, JCB, Rolls Royce, Alcon Components, BMW, BPW, Rover Cars, Range Rover, Bosch Braking Systems, Volvo, Meritor, Sumitomo Bakelite, Fennaco, Mando and TRW. In addition he has also evaluated alternative fuels for companies such as BT Fleet, CO2 Sense (with Green Urban Technologies) and UTO. He has published over 150 journal and conference papers on brake instabilities, design, education and alternative fuels.
His conference presentations are well received and acknowledged through the Lloyd L Withrow Distinguished Speaker Award and lately The Dan Manhannah Achievement Award for contribution towards the braking fraternity and the education of automotive engineers.
• He is one of the world’s leading experts in Brake Noise and Judder, and has a very wide range of knowledge and experience in all aspects of Braking Systems, NVH & Automotive Engineering Education. His contribution to teaching excellence was recognized through the award of National Teaching Fellow.
• He is currently a member of the IMechE Automobile Division Board, a member of FISITA Education Committee, on the Advisory Board of SAE International Brake Colloquium and also on the Advisory Board of EuroBrake.
•Presently he is a visiting Professor at the University of Bradford where he is a key to developing a nationally recognised braking research laboratory.He also teaches automotive engineering subjects at the University of Leeds.
